LAYER EFFECTS

The layering system in Photoshop is extremely powerful and versatile. It can simply allow you to create a safe place to try out new ideas without affecting the rest of the image, or it can be used to add dramatic effects and glows to your images. Text, textures, and anything else you can think of can be added on to additional layers, which can all have effects applied to them. It would be impossible to show you all the layer effect possibilities here, but I have broken Basilica up into nine parts, and have applied a different effect to each section to demonstrate a few of the many options available to you. Each part has had an exact copy of the background layer on it, but at 50% Opacity to prevent it overwriting the underlying layer. The layer modes in Photoshop mirror the brush modes (see Brush Effects), so once you learn how they work in brush mode, you will understand what to expect when using the same effects on layers. Above all, do not be afraid of experimenting with these effects – just dive in.
